YouTube Translate & Speak ("the Extension") is a Chrome extension that translates video subtitles, reads them aloud and summarizes videos on supported platforms: YouTube, TED, Udemy and Coursera. This policy explains what data it handles, where that data is stored and which services receive it.
Summary
- We do not operate any server that receives or stores your data.
- Your settings, cached translations, cached summaries and API keys are stored locally in your browser.
- Subtitle text, video transcripts and tab audio are sent only to the service you chose for that feature, directly from your browser.
- Tab audio is captured only while you have Soniox speech-to-text switched on.
- We do not collect personal information and we do not use analytics, telemetry or tracking.
Data the Extension handles
| Data | Purpose | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Subtitle and caption text | Translating captions, showing them on the player and exporting SRT files | The translation provider you selected |
| Video transcript (YouTube) | AI video summary, only when you press Summarize | The AI provider you selected |
| Translated text | Reading subtitles aloud, if you turn it on | Your browser's built-in voices, Google Cloud TTS or your local TTS server, depending on your choice |
| Tab audio | Generating captions for videos with no subtitles | Soniox, only while Soniox STT is on |
| Cached translations and summaries | Avoiding repeat requests when you revisit a video | Your browser's local storage |
| Preferences and settings | Restoring your language, providers, subtitle style and panel state | Your browser's local storage |
| API keys (optional) | Authenticating requests to the services you chose | Your browser's local storage, and the official endpoint of that service |
| SRT files | Subtitle downloads you request | Your downloads folder |
Stored on your device
The Extension keeps its data in Chrome's extension storage (chrome.storage.local). Nothing is stored on an external server, database or cloud storage controlled by us.
Preferences and settings
Your target language, translation provider, TTS provider, subtitle style and interface state. They stay until you change them, clear them or uninstall the Extension.
Cached translations and summaries
Translated subtitles and AI summaries are cached per video so you do not need to translate or summarize the same video again. You can clear cached translations at any time with the 🗑 button in the control panel.
API keys
If you add an API key, it is stored locally and used only to authenticate requests to the service it belongs to. It is never sent to us or to any other server.
Services that receive data
Requests go directly from your browser to the services below. No data passes through an intermediary server controlled by us. Only the services you actually select are contacted.

What we do not collect
- Personally identifiable information such as your name, email address or postal address.
- Browsing history or activity outside the supported video platforms.
- Authentication tokens or login credentials for any platform.
- Analytics, telemetry or usage tracking data.
Browser permissions
| Permission | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Site access (YouTube, TED, Udemy, Coursera) | Reading video captions and showing the subtitle overlay and control panel on the player |
| API access (Google, OpenAI and other providers) | Sending translation, speech and summary requests to the provider you chose |
| Tab audio capture | Used only while Soniox STT is active, to generate captions from the current tab's audio |
| Storage | Keeping your preferences, cached translations, summaries and API keys on your device |
| Active Tab / Scripting | Running the Extension's scripts on supported video pages |
Security
- API keys are stored in Chrome's extension storage, which web pages cannot read.
- Keys are sent only to the official endpoint of the service they belong to.
- We run no server that could store or leak your data.
Extension storage is not encrypted, so anyone with access to your browser profile could read it. Where a provider allows it, we recommend restricting your API keys and setting usage limits in that provider's dashboard.
Your control and deletion
- Clear the cache: use the 🗑 button in the control panel to remove cached translations.
- Change or remove API keys: do it anytime in the Extension's settings.
- Keep everything free and local: the default Google Translate engine and browser voices need no key at all.
- Remove everything: uninstalling the Extension deletes all locally stored data, including settings, cached translations, summaries and API keys.
Because we do not hold any of your data, there is nothing for us to export or delete on our side. Data you sent to a third-party service is handled under that service's policy.
Children's privacy
The Extension is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect any personal information from children.
Changes
We may update this policy as the Extension develops. Changes will appear on this page with an updated date at the top.
